Free Instructions - Crochet Bag

Strngbag.jpg (483039 bytes)

Make a  dolly-sized string bag, just like the big girl carry!  The bags shown were made with ombre thread but the bag is just as cute done in all one color.

Finished size of these bags is approx. 4 1/4" across, 7 1/4" long.

I adapted a pattern from  J & P Coats, this bag is easy to make and looks really cute on 18" dolls!  I can do one bag in a long evening of television watching!

To make these bags, you will need

Susan Bates crochet hook, size 3US/1.85mm, or equivalent

Ball of pearl cotton. (The ball I used didn't have a size for the thread) Approx. 230 yards or 1.75 oz ball will do 2 bags.                                                                                                                                                                                      Start: Ch 2;

Rnd 1: work 6 sc in first chain; do not join but mark end of rnd with a contrasting thread. Continue to move thread to mark end of each round.                                                                                                                                                           Rnd 2: [2sc in next sc--inc made] 6 times--12 sc.
Rnd 3: [Inc in next sc, sc in next sc] 6 times--18sc.
Rnd 4: [Inc in next sc, sc in next 2sc] 6 times--24sc.
Rnd 5: [Inc in next sc, sc in next  3 sc]6 times--30sc.
Rnd 6: [Inc in next sc, sc in next 4 sc] 6 times--36 sc.
Rnd 7: [Inc in next sc, sc in next 5 sc] 6 times--42 sc.
Rnd 8: [Inc in next sc, sc in next 6 sc] 6 times--48 sc.
Rnd 9: [Inc in next sc, sc in next 7 sc] 6 times--54 sc.
Rnd 10: [Inc in next sc, sc in next 8 sc] 6 times--60 sc.
Rnd 11: [Inc in next sc, sc in next 9 sc] 6 times--66 sc.
Rnd 12: [Inc in next sc, sc in next 10 sc] 6 times--72 sc.

Increases are now complete. Leave row marker in place, and work even in rounds of sc for 20 rounds.

Handles: sc across half of the row; ch 1, turn.  Decrease at beginning and end of each row until 5 stitches remain. Decrease by inserting hook in next sc, yo pull up loop, insert hook in next sc, yo pull up loop, 3 loops on hook. Yo and pull through 3 loops, sc to within last 2 sc on row and decrease, turn and repeat decreasing at beginning and end of each row until 5 stitches remain. Work even for 25 rows. End.

For other handle, from right side of bag, starting in next sc from first handle, attach thread and sc in remaining sc. Continue as for first handle except leave thread attached at end of 25 rows.

To finish bag: From right side of bag, sc in each end of row of handle, to end of other handle.   Sl st handle ends together, right sides together, continue sc around remaining side of handles. Tie off at end of row.

Thread any thread ends in and your bag is finished!
